What is “Jornadas Regionales de Software Libre”?

JSRL is a regional, international & roving event where many people work to integrate projects, launch new ideas and overcome the hurdles of the software they use.

2008 will be the 8th. edition of the event that already was held at Argentina and Uruguay. For the 2009 edition Chile is planning to host it.

During the event programmers, developers, strategists, technology experts and entrepeneurs involved with Free software will meet to exchange ideas, share techniques, discuss and explore free technologies such as Perl, MySQL, JAVA, PHP, Python, Linux, Apache and many more.

Where are they being held?

The conference will be held at the University of Belgrano, Zabala 1837, Capital Federal - Argentina. There is more information regarding how to get there and where to stay in this page.

What do Free Software is?

Free Software are all those programs whose license terms offer four freedoms to the user and the developer

  • Freedom to use the software for whatever purpose
  • Freedom to study and adapt the source code to his/hers own needs
  • Freedom to copy and distribute it
  • Freedom to upgrade the software and distribute those upgrades

Software is today the digital era cultural technique. Programs manage communications and store modern society memories. Within this increasing computerization of the social processes, access to software is not only a strategic issue in the economic and technological filed, but, and mainly, in the field of political independence, culture and access to knowledge that is essential to daily life.

Brief history:

First Edition

During August 4th, 5th, & 6th, 2000, the first Jornadas Nacionales de Software Libre were hosted at Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina, organized by GNU/Linux User Group Rosario and the Asociación de Nuevas Tecnologías. Second Edition

Following up with what was done at Rosario in 2000, UYLUG takes the task of holding the 2nd. Jornadas Regionales de Software Libre, on June 28th, 29th & 30th, 2001, on the Intendencia Municipal de Montevideo, Uruguay. Read more…

Third Edition

The 3rd. Jornadas Regionales de Software Libre were held on October 17th, 18th, & 19th, 2002 at the Collage of Sciences, University de la República site. Among key speakers were John Hall (President of Linux International) and Larry Wall (creator of Perl language). Read more…

Fourth Edition

Once again, organized by UYLUG during November 6th, 7th, & 8th, 2003, the 4th. edition of the Jornadas were hosted at Radisson Victoria Plaza Hotel, Montevideo, Uruguay. Read more…

Fifth Edition

2005 5th. Jornadas were organized once again by ANT and local Free Software groups, on November 20th, 21th, 22th and 23th, at Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina. Those were sponsored by UNESCO and had Richard M. Stallman as a key speaker, along with other active members from a different Free Software proyects. Read more…

Sixth. Edition

The 6th. Jornadas were held at Mendoza, Argentina during October 13th, 14th, & 15th, 2006. This editon was organized by Grupo de Usuarios de Software Libre de Mendoza. Read more…

The 7th Jornadas were held during Agust 7th through 11th, 2007 at Cordoba, Argentina. This edition was organized by the Grupo de Usuarios de Software Libre de Córdoba, Via Libre Fundation and the University Nacional de Córdoba. Read more…

Who hosts this year’s?

The organization of the workshop this year (2008) rests upon CaFeLUG, Capital Federal Free Software Users Group and has the support and participation of organizations alike. Since its beginnings, back to 2000, CaFeLUG has been building up a thriving task force of Free Software philosophy advocates, being one of the most numerous and active groups of the country.

CaFeLUG does regular work activities, among whose you can find monthly meetings, Charlas Técnicas Trimestrales (Quarterly Technical Speeches) and its Conferencia Anual (Anual Conference), CaFeCONF.
